When I was introduced to LED, or light emitting diode therapy, several years ago, I was a little skeptical. I wondered how something so simple could make a difference in a person's health and appearance. The science was interesting, but the results were fascinating. I saw improvements in my own skin and in that of my clients that just couldn't be achieved with cosmetics alone. LED light therapy remains my favorite modality for corrective skin care and pain management.
LED light therapy is a treatment that uses varying wavelengths of light, including red and blue. NASA originally developed it for plant growth experiments on shuttle missions. NASA began studying LED’s effects in promoting wound healing in astronauts by helping cells and tissues grow. Medical universities expanded on the NASA studies to develop protocols for wound healing and other medical uses. The U.S. Navy SEALs began using it in the 1990s to help heal wounds quickly and to help regenerate damaged muscle tissues.
The skin care industry became interested in LED light therapy to help control acne and increase collagen production in mature skin. LED is now used by many estheticians and med spas to help regenerate the skin and improve elasticity, tone and texture.
Red is primarily used for anti-aging, while blue is used for acne treatment.
Safety: Unlike other types of light therapy, LEDs do not contain ultraviolet rays. Therefore, they’re safe for regular use. There is no downtime with LED light therapy. It is completely non-invasive and is safe for all skin tones and conditions. Side effects are extremely rare, but may include increased inflammation.
I provide LED light therapy with my LumiFacial and LumilIft Facial. I can customize the treatment, according to the skin condition we wish to improve,
by setting the programming on my SoliTone light panel.
My clients can also use handheld LED devices at home to continue making improvements between facials.
